News, community edition

The wife and I play Gladiator and Chanter. We nicely complement each other that way. I almost went Cleric, but if I play another healing only class I swear I’ll go mad (3 years of healing in WoW is quite enough thank you very much). I had a lot of fun the other day because we were capable of going into Eracus Temple on our own without a group and were able to finish a couple of quests.

On his blog, Taugrim describes a similar situation where a Chanter and Templar went solo into Fire Temple and managed to defeat Kromede. The full article with a lot of useful tips is located here and you can view the video of the endeavor below.

I still recommend you visit Taugrim’s blog for some knowledgeable Aion tips.

While we’re on the subject of Fire Temple … Mojeaux of “Yet Another Aion Blog” wrote about his adventures he had in Aion for holidays. He also did some Kromede grind for the weapon and leveled his alts for the Daevaonian set. You can imagine him being very happy with the Double XP weekend. Read all about it in his latest blog post.

To perfectly complement this instance walkthrough blog post week we have Hoschi and his Dark Poeta guide. Excellent guide that is. Very detailed and certainly worth the read.

Aion grabs a lot of “best of 2009” rewards

Aion_Tamat was so kind to compile a list of all the sites that featured Aion in their “best of 2009” articles. IGN, TenTonHammer, Mmorpg.com, ZAM, The Escapist and others found Aion to have made an impact on the gaming scene last year. You can find the full list and the exact awards in the official post on the Aion website.

And looking back at 2009, all things considered, it was a great year for Aion and its community. After a well received beta testing period the game launched successfully, despite all the queues, and sold a large number a copies (over a million in the US and EU combined I believe). The game really feels familiar the moment you start playing it. Everything is where it should be and similar to other games in its genre, but what I appreciate the most is that it plays just differently enough to feel like a fresh new experience. Gamers recognized that and many decided to stick with it despite the grind. In my opinion the game delivers on its PvP promise as well. The war is constantly waging in Atreia.

There are problems of course. XP curve is too steep, gold sellers are extremely aggressive and the game needs a slight shift of philosophy if it plans on keeping its western customers. But, considering the numbers and the gaming experience it brings Aion is a huge success. Best of 2009 for sure.

Whats more important is 2010. The year will bring a lot of very “unpleasant” competition. We have Star Trek Online launching in a few weeks along with Global Agenda, and lets not forget that 2010 is the year when Cataclysm launches (WoW expansion). There’s All Points Bulletin on the horizon as well, and that game will surely target the same crowd as Aion (all about PvP). I’m not even going to mention the possibility of Star Wars The Old Republic being released in 2010 because I would have to clone myself several times to be able to play all the things I wanted to (and lets face it – how do you compete against a game that has swords, but made of lasers – its like sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads (TM Austin Powers)). It will be exciting to see what NCSoft has planned for us in such an eventful year.

I was monitoring the sales charts of the digital download system Steam during the holidays and I was pleasantly surprised to see Aion in the top 20 top sellers although it was not on discount. This alone is a great sign that the game is doing something good and that people want to explore the world of Atreia. Now NCSoft start giving us more of that world (and Double XP weekends plx 🙂 ).

Who wants to become a trillionaire?

This is both hilarious and scary! Apparently, a small number of players on the Azphel server had received over 30 trillion Kinah as part of a reward glitch. Since nothing could have been done with this glitch the server was rolled back to that server’s morning state. Azphel was down for along time in attempts to prevent this bug from happening again and because of the rollback. Here’s the comment by NCSoft made on the official web site:

As an apology for the downtime, we’ll be rewarding everyone on the Azphel server with five Lodas Amulets later this week. It’s our goal at NCsoft to provide the best possible service to our customers. Our apologies for the downtime and as always, thank you for your continued patience.

Update: We’ve found a few additional bugs that are having a direct impact on the stability of the Azphel economy. We hope to have more information for you Tuesday morning.

I am the sword master!

A video from what appears to be the Korean version of the game started circulating the web some time ago. It showcases Aion weapons with funny models/skins. Seems you can model your weapon to look like a trout or carrots or a fork even. The video just speaks for itself. Any comment would be moot.

In line with the above video – I just saw this episode of a show called the Big Bang Theory depicting a MMO dungeon crawl. I think all MMORPG players can relate to this one… Enjoy:

Aion Holiday spirit

The Halloween event in Aion did not impress. Hopes for Christmas / New Year events were not high either. In stroke of genius NCSoft provided a giant piano in front of the Christmas tree in the capital cities for their Solorius Festival event. Since there is no ciontent like user created content, some great videos have surfaced featuring the aforementioned piano and some highly synchronized players :). Here’s a few videos for your enjoyment:

Paid services announced for Aion and holiday break

As part of their “we’re going on Christmas vacation” post on the official site Aion community managers revealed what they are planning for Aion’s immediate future. One of the programs is the paid account service. For a small fee you will be able to change your character’s appearance, gender, name or your Legion’s name. The exact pricing and service info should be available in February, and the service is scheduled to become available in the first quarter of 2010.

There’s also a promise of new content updates (“a great deal of new content” is what is said in the post), but they are still not ready to reveal any details.

The support services will be working during the Holidays, and everyone else returns to the NCSoft offices January 4th.

Edit: Ah yes, the image of Mr. T in Santa clothes is provided to you completely randomly and has nothing to do with the news post itself. Yes, we are that cool (ed. NOT).

How to expand your inventory cube in Aion?

When you start, you’ll have 27 cube slots + 1 extra inventory slot for Quest item in your inventory bag. Although it may appear like a lot of space, soon you’ll realize that you need additional slots. You can expand your Cube by visiting a Cube Artisan in most towns or villages and paying a fee. Your default Cube, 27 inventory slots, is 3 rows of 9 slots.

When you expand your Cube to the next level you will add another row of 9 slots. Different Cube Artisans can help you to expand your Cube for 5 levels. When you raise your inventory Cube to level 5, additional rows can be added by quests or as a Veteran Reward. You can have a maximum of 4 Cubes: one default Cube and three Expanded Cubes.
